The 33 Project

Morning! It’s downright warm in NYC and despite the continued onslaught of depressing news, we’re here again, living another day.

Fun ones to talk about today.

1/ I loved this touching piece about a home on Fire Island and the story of its inhabitants as told through the music they’d play. I am always interested in a story about gay community coming together, especially during times of crisis, but something about this one really tugged at the heartstrings. There’s a lot of life and joy in it. And, I really love how it shows that music plays such a critical role in how we process life and death and community. Here’s the playlist if you need to be drawn in through the tunes. Highly recommend.

2/ I love seeing these young kids standing up for their right to read banned books. According to the reporting in this article:

1,586 books have been yanked from libraries or classrooms in the past nine months. By comparison, 2018, 2019 and 2020 each saw about 300 book challenges or bans, according to an ALA tally.

Ugh.

3/ Last one, I have to thank Susannah for recommending. If you’re a New Yorker and you’re sick of idling trucks, here’s a way to make money off their stupidity. Just watch out, it might be a little dangerous.

Thanks for reading and feel free, as always, to subscribe and share with anyone you think may enjoy reading these recs. Have a great Thursday!
