The 33 Project

Morning. A very special “rabbit rabbit” to Dennis even though he doesn’t read this newsletter. It’s been a roller coaster of a week for me, but alas I’m still showing up and doing things. So here we are, ready for this week’s recs.

Starting with a piece on writing…

1/ Found this interesting piece from James Baldwin published back in 1962.

“in my mind, the effort to become a great novelist simply involves attempting to tell as much of the truth as one can bear, and then a little more… Success is an American word which cannot conceivably, unless it is defined in an extremely severe, ironical and painful way, have any place in the vocabulary of any artist.”

The piece is filled with lots of gems and a sort of call to arms to writers to keep pushing against norms. It’s a good read.

2/ When I worked at #waywire, I met Kendall Ciesemier and was instantly impressed. Recently she wrote this excellent piece published in the NYT after the Dobbs decision and the overturning of Roe v Wade. Her reflections made me consider how an intersectional approach to progressive politics really is essential.

3/ I’ve always loved Frank Lloyd Wright. As a kid, I read biographies and played with toy model sets meant to reflect his style. This video brought me back to those days obsessing over his work.

Bonus!/ This is enraging.

That’s all for this week. As always, feel free to share this newsletter with anyone you think may find it interesting. See you next Thursday.
